Sustainability
What does it really mean to live sustainably?
Part of our mission at Farmhouse is to experiment with different methods of living a more sustainable lifestyle, and find creative ways to engage our community in thinking and learning about what it means to live more sustainably. This means addressing sustainability from a very pragmatic angle, learning everything we can about how our every actions impact ourselves, our communities, and our environment, and then sharing this important knowledge with our peers to inspire positive action and change.
To do this, we've identified eight areas where we can strive to become more sustainable in our everyday actions. SUSTAINABILITY in a Nutshell...
Sustainability lies at the crux of three interrelated and
interdependent elements that define our standard of living and
quality of life: our society, economy, and the environment.
interdependent elements that define our standard of living and
quality of life: our society, economy, and the environment.
It is up to us to figure out how to live in a way that
is equitable, viable, and bearable. Doing this will ensure that
we have the ability to meet the needs of today without
compromising the needs of future generations.
This is the challenge for our generation. We are committed to exploring
what it means to live a more sustainable lifestyle, one that addresses
both environmental and social justice concerns. We also feel a need to address sustainability on both the individual and systemic level; while we all need to take personal responsibility for our actions, we must also work to reform the institutions in our society that will ultimately decide the shape of our future on this planet.
It works both ways; we can't do this alone.

Our Philosophy
Sustainability. We hear this word everywhere. From corporate Walmart to Capital Hill, it seems that everyone just loves to use this new buzz word, and everyone has their own interpretation of what it means. It's easy to get confused, and even frustrated, when such a powerful word is overused and misused until it is almost meaningless, its inspirational quota all but lost. But it is not too late to reclaim this word. So before you roll your eyes and think, "not another lesson on sustainability," let us show you what this word can really mean, and how we are working to implement it in the most practical, accessible, and sensible way we can.
